WORDS AND THEIR USE



Words & Their use:
          1.   Adulation: flattery; admiration. The rock star thrived on the adulation of his groupies 
                 and yes men.
         2.   Adulterate: make impure by adding inferior or tainted substances. It is a crime to  
               adulterate foods without informing the buyer.
         3.    Advent: arrival. Most American’s were unaware of the advent of the Nuclear Age until 
                the news of Hiroshima reached them.
         4.    Adventitious: accidental; causal. He found this adventitious meeting with his friend 
               extremely fortunate.
         5.    Adversary: opponent; enemy. Batman struggled to save Gotham City from the 
                machinations of his wicked adversary.
         6.    Adverse: unfavorable; hostile. The recession had a highly adverse effect.
         7.    Adversity: poverty; misfortune. We must learn to meet adversity gracefully.
         8.    Advert: refer (to). Since you advert to this matter so frequently, you must regard it as 
                important.
         9.   Advocacy: support; active pleading on behalf of someone or something. His advocacy of 
                the human rights of black South Africans is really remarkable.
        10.  Advocate: urge; plead for. The abolitionists advocated freedom for the slaves.
